ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOR PREVENTION STRATEGIES

Individuals with autism can be super sensitive to noises and other stimuli that may not bother a typically developing person.  This is why it is important for us to look at the environmental stimuli and see what we can modify or limit.  Below are a list of modifications that can be taken in order limit behaviors:

- Reduce environmental stimuli -- Remove distracting stimuli, minimize materials that are available at one time, reduce noise level, adjust lighting

- Expectationsvisual schedule, furniture is set up in an organized way, expectations/rules are posted

- Promote communication use encouragements for the use of communication and social interaction, flexible grouping to foster communication

- Breaksprovide the needed sensory breaks for the individual.  For some individuals, this may mean ensuring they are not hungry and/or thirsty.  For lower functioning individuals, it may mean helping them if they are in pain and cannot communicate this.

***NOTE:  These are some of the strategies that workfor many individuals, there may be other behaviors that need to be addressed at the same time or at different times.  It is important to get the behaviors under control before other areas may be worked on and every individual is different***
